SCHEDULE (PDF)

We invite you to the 31st Prague Geotechnical Days 2025 conference, which will take place on May 26–27, 2025, at the premises of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Charles University. Leading experts from around the world will present current challenges in rock mechanics and its application in engineering practice

Prague Geotechnical Days 2025 are dedicated to the theme Rock Mechanics in Engineering Practice. With international speakers from Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, and Turkey, we will focus on the latest research and practical experience in rock mechanics. Key topics will include rock mass stability, geotechnical characterization, numerical modelling, and the design of nuclear waste repositories.

Keynote Lectures by International Experts and the 31st Prague Geotechnical Lecture

A major highlight of the program will be the 31st Prague Geotechnical Lecture, delivered by Professor Lyesse Laloui from EPFL Lausanne. His lecture will focus on advances in numerical design and analysis of underground nuclear waste repositories. Additionally, the conference will feature lectures by Professor Thomas Marcher (TU Graz), who will address challenges of “hard soil and soft rock”, Professor Roberto Cudmani (TU Munich), who will focus on the geotechnical characterization of the tertiary sediments in Munich and an overview of the large infrastructure projects. Professor Gary Couples (Heriot-Watt University) will discuss wellbore stability, Professor Jordan Aaron (ETH Zurich) will present new insights into catastrophic failure, and Dr. Olga Mavrouli (University of West Attica) will offer a new perspective on rockfall prediction using remote sensing. Professor Candan Gokceoglu (Cappadocia University) will address the consequences of poor-quality rock mass characterization and Professor Frédéric Collin (University of Liège) will present numerical modelling for the design of nuclear waste geological disposal.

Practical Workshop on Energy Geotechnology

On May 27, 2025, a workshop on Energy Geotechnology, led by Professor Lyesse Laloui, will provide participants with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge in sustainable energy solutions and discuss current trends in the field.

Quido Záruba Award for Young Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers

The event will also feature the Quido Záruba Award Ceremony, a prestigious recognition for young engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the field. This award honours the legacy of Academician Quido Záruba, the founder of Czech engineering geology, and supports the new generation of experts in their career development.

Connecting Experts from Around the World

Since 1993, the Prague Geotechnical Days conference has brought together leading geotechnical experts from around the world. For over three decades, we have been sharing cutting-edge scientific knowledge and discussing the latest developments in geotechnical engineering. The international conference is organized by SG Geotechnika in collaboration with the Faculty of Science at Charles University and CSS SMGE, under the auspices of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The conference is also part of the ČKAIT lifelong learning program, and participants are eligible to receive two credit points.

We look forward to seeing you in Prague!
